Watch the STRAW Project at work!
Point Blue’s STRAW Program – which stands for Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed – helped us restore a tributary to Honsinger Creek, which flows through the ranch. Working with the 3rd and 7th grade classes from Pescadero Elementary we installed 236 native plants, including trees, shrubs, and forbs, of 14 different species.
STRAW’s planting design followed Point Blue’s climate-smart restoration approach, meaning, the 14 different types of native trees, shrubs and forbs will provide food and shelter for wildlife whether it gets hotter and drier, or wetter and cooler, as the climate changes.
The plants installed by the students are helping repair the creek by stabilizing the soils with their roots, filtering runoff from the pastures, trapping soils and debris, and creating wildlife habitat.
